Foresight is Power: What is the Role of the Architect in 2025?
Tuesday, May 11, 2010   2:00pm – 3:30pm

Doing Now for What Will Be Needed Then
Presented by: Ralph W. Liebing, RA, CSI, Hixon
While future progress over the next 15 years is ripe for speculation and predictions, it is almost certainly going to be a period of very rapid development and advancement, particularly for architects. The mere passage of time between now and 2025 is not going to remove, resolve, or ameliorate the drastic professional shortcomings that exist today. Read more…

Achieving Integrated Design by 2025
Presented by: James Scott Brew, FCSI, AIA, LEED AP, Rocky Mountain Institute
Today, only 1-3% of new or whole building retrofits constructed annually achieve an integrated energy design that radically reduces consumption by 50% or more over the regional code level.  This is clearly not enough to curb climate change. Our shared vision of regenerative buildings by 2025 includes buildings that clean the water and air that falls on or enters them, produce more energy than they consume and provide indoor environments that are healthy and productive for occupants.  Read more…

Is the Architect Destined for Irrelevance?
Presented by: Walter R. Scarborough, CSI, SCIP, AIA, HALL | Building Information Group, LLC
As buildings continue to become more complex, intricate, and sophisticated, the need for skilled professionals with the knowledge and capability to make the many decisions to create a building that satisfies the needs of an owner will continue to be a significant part of the project delivery process well into the future.  Read more…

Achieving High Performance Buildings Cost-Effectively
Presented by: Richard Paradis, P.E., BSCP, National Institute of Building Sciences
The Architect of the future will face significantly greater challenges than those of today’s architect. The goal of net-zero energy buildings by 2030, the demand for building resiliency and adaptability, designing for deconstruction, retrofitting existing buildings to improve their energy performance, smart building technology, the emergence of nanotechnology for the building’s envelope and materials will all impact the architect of the future.
